MR. EMMANUEL LARBI – SOCIAL WELFARE
This Department coordinates and promotes social development programmes and policies to improve the welfare of people and communities in the Service.
The department represents the MMDAs and the regional planning units on issues pertaining to social and community development.
It plans, initiates and coordinates community-based projects, day care centres and services for the rehabilitation of the physically challenged.
LIST OF SOCIAL SERVICE RENDERED BY THE DEPARTMENT
- Work in collaboration with Police and Court to deal with Juveniles in conflict with the law and other family tribunal cases including writing investigation reports.
- Provide access to social welfare services for the disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalized in the society.
- Cooperate and regulate specialized residential service for children under privileged youth and persons with disability.
- Facilitate opportunity for Non-governmental organizations to develop social welfare services in collaboration with their communities.
- Create awareness on prevention and control of HIV/AIDS as well as undertake care/support programmes for persons living with HIV/AIDS in collaboration with Ministry of Health, District Assembly and other related agency and promote community care.
- Create awareness on population issues and family planning in collaboration with Ministry of Health, Ghana Education Service and other related service.
- Promote social, economic and emotional stability in families.
- Promote poverty alleviation and ensure income security amongst the vulnerable, marginalized and the disadvantages groups.
- Educate communities on government programmes.
- Undertake public sensitization and engage men and women on gender based violence prevention in schools and communities Undertake education on the worst forms of child labour, teenage pregnancy and other related social issues.
- Undertake formation of groups for income generating activities. E.g. Soap making, batik tie-dye, beads making etc.
- Provide hospital welfare services such as tracing of families, counselling and inter alia.
- Monitor, supervise NGOs and Day Care Centres as well as registration and renewal of certificates.
- Undertake other community care programmes such as LEAP, LIPW, etc.
LIST OF NUTRITION-ORIENTED INTERVENTIONS FROM THE GHANA HEATH SERVICE (GHS) AND AVAILABLE LINKAGES
1. Growth monitoring in static and outreach points as well as in schools
The programme is aimed at assessing the level of malnutrition among children from 0-59
months. Growth monitoring of children 0-59mth was done monthly at all static and outreach
points
2. Monthly support visit to facilities
3. Routine Vitamin A supplementation
TO ensure children within the target population from 6-59mths are dosed with Vitamin A
supplement
4. Child Health Promotion Week Celebration
5. Community- based management of acute malnutrition
6. Community- infant and young child feeding.
Breastfeeding promotion and lactation management is done in all the facilities. Exclusive breastfeeding
for six (6) month and breastfeeding till two (2) years were are major concern since this practice helps the
baby to grow well and also prevent various diseases from attacking them.
